Rumors of my demise have been greatly exaggerated

Boy, do I hate long goodbyes. That’s what these past six months have felt like for me, one long goodbye to a lot of my vices.

Let’s see, what have I been up to since December:

1) Spent several months playing World of Warcraft…now retired indefinitely.
2) Gained about 20 pounds due to being inactive…and eating a lot of bad food.
3) Busted my ass at work trying to prove myself worthy of a promotion…of which I received just this past week. Woo hoo!!
4) I said goodbye to my favorite TV show, Smallville on 5-13-2011.
5) Various useless activities.

And so we come to June, the midpoint of 2011. I have several plans for the next few months, some involving a lot of thought before implementing. I’m also making a conscious effort to be more active and be a better person overall – physically and mentally.

Over the next few weeks I’m going to start recording my workout results. Right now I weigh about 273 pounds. My plan is to get down to 240 pounds by the end of July, and 225 pounds by September.

Dark Eldar Update: Week 2

After working on the Reavers and testing out the color scheme – I decided to move on to a bigger model: the Raider.

Hoo boy, this is an awesome kit

I’ll be completely honest, I hate painting vehicles with a passion. I guess the main reason would be the amount of time that it takes to complete them. I also can’t stand doing highlights on vehicles – way too easy to make a mistake.

I don’t feel the same way though about this model. I used the same steps from the Reavers with a few exceptions.

Dark Eldar Update: Week 1

I finally got some spare time to sit down and paint this past week. So far I’m very pleased with the color scheme that I’ve chosen for the Reavers.

Here is the breakdown for the first stage:

After a spray of Skull White over the entire model I followed with:

Armor Plating and weapons – 1:1:1 mix of Warlock Purple, Necron Abyss, and Hormagaunt Purple

Chassis – 2:1 mix of Chaos Black and plain water

Seat - Pure Dark Flesh

Blade vanes and engine – 1:1 mix of Shining Gold and Chaos Black

The next stage involves cleaning up areas where the paint overlaps – specifically the blade vanes. I will then move on to adding highlights and other details. Check back soon for part 3 of the series…

40K Restart

So a few months back I liquidated the majority of my models by selling them on ebay. I did so because I didn’t want my life to be defined by a single hobby and because it was hurting my relationships.

Last month I received an email from Games Workshop detailing the release of the updated Dark Eldar. After seeing the preview pictures and reading up on the new Codex I’ve decided to begin collecting again.

I know what you are thinking: why in God’s name would I spend more money on the hobby that nearly ruined my life?

It’s not a simple question to answer. I have found myself needing something to do in my spare time that challenges me on a more profound level.

I made a few rules for myself regarding my 40K restart:

1) Only buy one kit at a time to build and paint. No more primered armies for me!

2) Chronicle my builds and throw them up on this site in detail.

First on the table is the new plastic Reaver Jetbikes. These come three to a kit with the new round peg flying bases.

I’ll update next week once I’ve completed painting them.

Tunnel Snakes vs Skulltakers: Round 2

Here we have yet another skirmish between the loyalist Cawdor Tunnel Snakes and the militant Van Saar Skulltakers.

The first snenario was ‘Rescue’, which involved a sneaky mission to release my captured juve named Bob. The Tunnel Snakes deployed three sentries and kept the rest of the gang in reserve.

My friend and I decided to include the ‘Treacherous Conditions’ from the Outlanders expansion. The rolled result for this game was ‘ash layer cloud’, meaning all movement was reduced to half.

The game ended without a single shot fired and Bob safely back home.

The next scenario was ‘Shootout’. In this one each gang selects random members to fight out an old fashioned ‘fast draw’. The Tunnel Snakes selected four members while the Skulltakers were allowed only two.

Tension mounted for several minutes as the fighters crept slowly toward each other. Miraculously the Skulltakers two gang members were able to take down two of the Tunnel Snakes and escaped with their lives.

The final scenario was another ‘Gang Fight’. This one was fought out entirely on the ground due to severe high winds (I love these Outlander rules). The game ended with several Tunnel Snakes out of action and not a single Skulltaker wounded.

Whew! Yet another messy campaign!

Next week I will try to post some video of at least one battle.

Necromunda – Tunnel Snakes vs. Skulltakers

Here are a few pictures from a recent Necromunda skirmish.

This was a “test” game under the ‘Gang Fight’ scenario between myself and a friend.

Necromunda is a tabletop skirmish game where two or more gangs fight each other in the bowels of a hive city.

I’ll post more pics and maybe some video next week.
